The government’s decision means that Åsa Persson will take over the chairpersonship from Cecilia Hermansson, whose term is ending. With this decision, the government confirms the Climate Policy Council’s nomination for a new Chair, a move designed to strengthen the independence of the Council in relation to the government.

Åsa Persson is Research Director and Deputy Director of SEI and Adjunct Associate Professor (Docent) at the Department for Thematic Studies, Environmental Change, Linköping University. Her research focuses on the link between international and national policies for sustainable development and climate change. Currently, she is part of the international research group preparing the 2023 UN Global Sustainable Development Report, published every four years.

I am honoured to be part of the Climate Policy Council in the role of Chair and look forward to collaborating with the collective expertise of the Council and its secretariat. Our focus this year will be on preparing for the assessment of the government's upcoming climate action plan. I also look forward to developing our collaboration with climate councils in other countries and at EU level, particularly now that all countries need to accelerate the climate transition and implement Fit for 55.

Cecilia Hermansson has been a member of the Council since 1 January 2021, first in the role of Vice-Chair and, since 6 September 2022, as Chair of the Council.

”It has been very stimulating to work with and to lead the extremely competent group that is the Council. Åsa Persson, with her deep expertise in the field of climate policy and solid experience from her role as Research Director at SEI, will contribute to maintaining the Council’s strong position as an independent reviewer of the government’s overall policy in relation to the climate goals. I am full of confidence in the Council’s continued work,” said Cecilia Hermansson.
