SEI’s Philip Osano to young people: translate conference appearances into practice

SEI Africa director Philip Osano told a workshop on Science for Environment Diplomacy in Kenya: Reflections from the Past to inform the future under climate change that young people must translate their conference appearance into practice.

Purpose and objectives

The purpose of the workshop was to reflect on Kenya’s role in global environmental diplomacy with the key objectives including:

  1. Convening current, former, and retired Ambassadors, policy makers, scientists and scholars to review and reflect on Kenya’s contribution to Global Environmental Diplomacy through bilateral and multilateral processes;
  2. Reflecting on Kenya’s legacy of the Stockholm+50 Conference, including launch of the Stockholm+50 Kenya Youth Task Force Report;
  3. Assessing the role and providing recommendations for strengthening scientific evidence to realise the objectives of the Environmental Pillar of Kenya’s Foreign Policy.

The workshop brought together participants, including current, former, and retired ambassadors, policy makers, scientists and scholars. Early career professionals were also invited to participate in part of the workshop as part of capacity development. Specifically, the interactions between senior and early career professionals enabled intergenerational dialogue and knowledge sharing between different generations of policy makers and scientists.

The workshop’s key outputs include:

  1. A report of the proceedings of the workshop
  2. The launch of the Stockholm+50 Kenya Youth Task Force report
  3. Formation of working groups to contribute to the publication of Kenya’s experiences in global environmental Diplomacy

The main outcomes from the workshop will include:

  1. A set of Working papers on Kenya diplomacy on different environmental processes (e.g. Stockholm Conference, Rio Summit etc), and topics (e.g. climate change, ozone layer depletion, biodiversity etc)
  2. Publications on Kenya’s Experiences in Global Environmental Diplomacy
  3. Inventory of academic and scholarly resources for use in developing content for a course on “Science for environment and climate change diplomacy” in Kenya
