RECONECT

RECONECT- Regenerating ECOsystems with Nature-based solutions for hydro-meteorological risk rEduCTion.

RECONECT aims to contribute to European reference framework on Nature Based Solutions (NBS) for hydro-meteorological risk reduction by demonstrating, referencing, upscaling and exploiting large-scale NBS in rural and natural areas.

In an era of Europe’s natural capital being under increased cumulative pressure from intensive agriculture, fisheries and forestry, and urban sprawl, RECONECT will stimulate a new culture of co-creation of ‘land use planning’ that links the reduction of hydro-meteorological risk with local and regional development objectives in a sustainable and financially viable way.

To do that, RECONECT draws upon the network of carefully selected Demonstrators and Collaborators that cover a range of local conditions, geographic characteristics, governance structures and social/cultural settings to successfully upscale NBS throughout Europe and internationally. The RECONECT consortium is a transdisciplinary partnership between researchers, industry partners (SMEs and large consultancies) and responsible agencies at the local and watershed/regional level dedicated to achieve the desired outcomes of the project.

RECONECT starts with a comprehensive review and mapping of existing planning/policy/regulatory frameworks and experiences related to NBS, and then proceeds to co-creation, demonstration, referencing, validation, and upscaling activities within a network of cases. Demonstration and evaluation work will focus on four key themes that have particular relevance to hydro-meteorological risk reduction, primarily floods, storm surges, landslides and droughts.
