SEI research leader, Johan Kuylenstierna and a panel of speakers discussed scientific and data-based approaches to combating air pollution in Northeast Asia at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Korea’s 3rd International Forum on Transboundary Air Pollution on September 8, 2023, at 14:00 pm (GMT+9).

The hybrid multi-stakeholder forum marks the 2023 UN International Day of Clean Air for blue skies to advance actions towards eliminating air pollution and improving air quality, which remains one of the top priorities for policymakers and a pressing challenge within and beyond Northeast Asia. As air pollutants do not stop at national borders, the benefit from cooperation to address transboundary air pollution is evident.

Johan Kuylenstierna presented his report titled   ‘Developing regional cooperation on air pollution in Northeast Asia: transferring lessons from Europe and North America, progress and future development‘, as a precursor to the discussion on  data-based approaches to addressing air pollution in Europe and the implications and lessons learned for Northeast Asia.

Drawing on experiences in Europe, the session discussed Europe’s monitoring and evaluation program that provided a channel for exchanging standardized scientific information and empirical data at a large scale, laying a solid scientific foundation for regional cooperation in addressing transboundary air pollution. Johan Kuylenstierna  explored the potential application of these approaches in other regions, including Northeast Asia, considering differences in geography, and socio-economic contexts.

3rd IFTAP

The 3rd International Forum on Transboundary Air Pollution (IFTAP) was a hybrid event that supported the international exchange of information and mutual learning on both the technical and policy levels. It brought together experts, policymakers, scientists, and many stakeholders from the Northeast Asia region and beyond, with a view to exploring possible solutions to the transboundary air pollution.
