SEI Researchers will participate at the 51st European Transport Conference (ETC) taking place in Milan, Italy. Research Fellow Claudia Strambo, and Research Associate Jindan Gong, will give presentations about the impacts of the transition to a low-carbon transport sector.

The European Transport Conference (ETC) is the annual conference of the Association for European Transport (AET), attracting transport policy makers, practitioners and researchers from all over Europe and beyond. ETC offers in-depth presentations on policy issues, best practice and research findings across the broad spectrum of transport. ETC also provides an opportunity where delegates can enjoy networking opportunities, participate in technical visits, and explore the exhibition.
"Understanding the distributional impacts of the low-carbon transition on transport workers: an interview study on the effects of electrification, digitalisation, and automation"

Electrification, digitalization and automation are three technological system changes anticipated to drive transport sector decarbonization to meet the goals set in the Paris Agreement. Such sustainable transition pathways shape workers’ day-to-day experiences. It is essential for the feasibility of the transition, and for it to be just, to ensure that those impacted by these changes see them as acceptable and fair.
The study gives insights into specific demands of transport workers in the context of transport sector decarbonization and can guide policies for a just transition for workers. Findings from this study will be presented by Jindan Gong.
"Beyond economic costs: potential losses from the transition to a low-carbon transport sector in Sweden"

To meet the goals set in the Paris Agreement, the transport sector requires transformative changes, not only in terms of prevailing technologies, but also with regards to reducing the need for fossil-based transport and increasing the share of public and active transport modes. Policy measures to enable this transformation are likely to have differentiated impacts on quality of life across society and have the potential to reproduce or deepen existing inequalities.
This study explores modal choices for realizing activities central to quality of life in Sweden, with a particular focus on societal groups at disadvantage in the transition. The presentation will share new insights explored in the study on potential losses associated with the low-carbon transition in the transport sector and its distribution across society.
