Paths to gender equality: the G20’s role in the spotlight

Within the framework of the G20’s pursuit of a more equitable and sustainable world, gender equality stands as both a goal and a condition for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Yet, how distant are we from this goal? Legal hesitations to recognize diverse genders, religious constraints on personal freedom, and the perception that gender concerns are secondary amidst larger issues raise critical questions. The transformative pledge of “Leave no one behind” lies at the heart of the 2030 Agenda – but the reality is that millions of people are being left behind and this number is continuing to grow.

In the backdrop of the 2023 G20’s focus on ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future,’ individual, national and collective efforts toward a greener and more equitable future are policy priorities. Still, none of the G20 nations, whether in the Global South or North, are on track to meet the gender equality target by 2030.

During the webinar, we will discuss the role of gender and social equity in advancing different types of sustainability-related transitions. We will facilitate sharing of best practices, experiences, and recommendations for the G20 as a platform for advancing gender equality. Moreover, we will identify pathways for G20 nations to support a gender-equitable future and accelerate the SDGs, and raise awareness of trade-offs between transitions and SDG attainment.

Our goal is to facilitate a vibrant exchange of insights, evidence and strategies, forging a unified and amplified voice. Through collaboration, we seek to synergize strengths, magnifying our collective impact and contribution to evidence-based policy change in the G20.
