SEI’s Philip Osano says over 900,000 deaths in Africa occur due to air pollution

SEI Africa director Philip Osano spoke at a policy dialogue on air quality in Tanzania opened by Tanzania’s Deputy Minister of State in the Vice-President’s Office (Union and Environment), Khamis Hamza Khamis and attended by policymakers, government officials, researchers civil society, private sector members and local communities to discuss the status of air pollution and propose strategies to improve air quality in Tanzania and Dar-es-Salaam city.

During the Dialogue, participants shared experiences on air quality management actions and strategies that contribute to health and wellbeing, national development goals, and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Panellists, presenters, and participants highlighted good practices and lessons learned, as well as described the efforts that national and local governments, city authorities, international organisations, and the private sector have taken to control air pollution. The dialogue also demonstrated the importance of partnerships in creating conditions for sustained interventions to achieve cleaner air in African cities.
