Since the launch of SEI and WWF’s Klimatkalkylatorn (Climate Calculator) tool, close to a million Swedish residents have answered a lifestyle and consumption questionnaire to determine the total emissions of their households. This data can now be visualized in map form, providing insights into consumption-based emission density down to postcode areas.
The Climate Calculator enables individuals to estimate the climate impact tied to their lifestyle and consumption habits. Data has been gathered from across Sweden, covering 94% of the country’s residential postcodes, with participation rates ranging from 5% in Högsby to 36% in Knivsta of the municipalities’ total population.
Despite national statistics indicating an average carbon footprint in Sweden of 4.6 tonnes CO2e per person in 2020, the self-reported data from the Climate Calculator reveals significant differences. Emission footprints at the postcode level and among households can vary from as low as 0.5 tonnes CO2e per person to nearly 50 tonnes. At the municipality level, Danderyd residents in Stockholm report the highest average footprint of 5.7 tonnes CO2e per person. In contrast, Vilhelmina in Västerbotten has the lowest at 3.8 tonnes.
